the (baked) goods: dia de los muertos cake

Happy Halloween my friends!!

I like holiday but I don't usually get to involved in the whole deal.  I don't know why - it's kind of the diy-ers dream.  Perhaps next year I will put in some more forethought and come up with some costumes for the family.

Anyway, this week I thought the least I could do was baking something spooky.  (I guess you should be warned - I'm not the most skilled cake decorator.  This is the best I could come up with.)

I searched around for a basic sheet cake recipe and I found the White Texas Sheet Cake.  This is the strangest cake I've ever made.  Boiling the butter first?  Wha?  Has anyone else tried a recipe like this before?

Even though it the cake passed the toothpick test coming out of the oven it was still looking a touch damp.
I haven't had a chance to taste test this baby yet, so I'll have to let you know the final verdict later.

The icing is your basic buttercream and then I cheated an bought those teeney tiny tubes of frosting from the grocery store.  Whaaat?  Don't judge!  This cake was more about the decorating than the process of baking.  A girl has got to junk bake every once in a while, right?

I'm looking forward to taking a knife to this fella.  I'll be back tomorrow to share some photos of Georgia's costume.  I'm telling you now so you can prepare for the cute attack.

Once Halloween is over I'm going to be all over you guys to tell me your secrets.  I need your help!!
